Sun Valley Mustard
Sun Valley Mustard isn’t new to the southern Idaho food scene. In fact, they’re celebrating 30 years of mustardmaking this year. And the Sun Valley-based business has been making its mark during the past three decades— with national and international awards.
“Sun Valley Mustard is really a local legend,” says owner-operator Josh Wells. “It’s part of the Sun Valley experience—a piece of the area to take home with you and share with family and friends.”
The local mustard’s iconic status isn’t based on the name alone, or the label featuring Sun Valley’s celebrated Bald Mountain ski hill. It’s a truly artisanal product—handcrafted in small batches with fine ingredients and distinctive flavors: Spicy-Sweet, Chardonnay, Amber Ale, Hot Jalapeño, Sweet Garlic and Dill.
Wells explains that the unique flavor profile is the result of handcrafted, small-batches and a “pudding style” of production. Pudding style mustards are cooked with heat, allowing for full flavor development versus “cold style” mustards, which are made by stirring water and mustard without using heat.
Wells says Sun Valley Mustard is firmly rooted in the community and believes in giving back. The company is currently partnering with Camp Rainbow Gold, a summer camp program in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area for children diagnosed with cancer and their families. Sun Valley Mustard has created a custom label on their signature Spicy-Sweet flavor with information on the camps and they’re topping the special series with a flashy gold lid. Their goal is to build awareness of Camp Rainbow Gold and support the program—a portion of sales benefits the camps. Wells says they plan to roll out similar programs with other local organizations.
